Instagram comment moderation: the complete guide for brands

Instagram spam is short, fast and relentless: a fire emoji from an account with a link in its bio, three strangers tagged under a reel, "check my page" under everything you post, a clone of your brand promising a giveaway. Here is what Instagram gives you to fight it, where that stops, and how to run moderation for a brand account that also sells.

What Instagram gives you for free

Instagram's own controls live in Settings under Privacy. They are better than they were, and you should switch all of them on.

  • Hidden Words: your own list of words, phrases and emoji. Comments that contain them go to a hidden folder you can review. Instagram also catches common misspellings.
  • Hide offensive comments: Instagram's built-in filter for content people commonly report, on by default for most accounts.
  • Advanced Comment Filtering: a more aggressive version of the same filter for borderline comments.
  • Limits: temporarily restrict comments from people who do not follow you, or who followed recently, for a viral moment or a launch.
  • Per-post comment controls: turn comments off on one post, or restrict who can comment.

Where the built-in tools stop

  • They are per account. Ten client accounts means ten settings screens and ten hidden folders to check.
  • They match words, not meaning. Hidden Words cannot tell "worst experience, never again" from "worst fear was it would not fit, but it does".
  • They cannot reply, and they cannot move a conversation to a direct message.
  • There is no log of what was hidden and why, and no team workflow around it.

Three kinds of Instagram comments and what to do with each

  • Noise: mentions, hashtag piles, emoji-only, links, contact details, image-only comments. Hide automatically by pattern. There is nothing to read here.
  • Attacks and scams: hostility aimed at you, impersonation, giveaway scams, competitor plugs. Hide with an AI pass that reads context, because the words vary and keyword lists lag behind.
  • Questions and complaints: "is this still available?", "my order has not arrived". Keep them visible and answer them. These are your customers.

Setting up a moderation tool for Instagram

A tool such as Engageefy connects to your professional account through Meta's API, with your own Instagram login or through the Facebook Page it is linked to. Both paths give the same abilities: read, hide, reply, message. The setup:

  1. 1Connect the account. If it is linked to a Facebook Page, connecting the page brings Instagram along; if not, use Instagram login.
  2. 2Switch on the pattern rules: mentions, hashtags, emoji floods, links, contact details, image-only comments. These rules can apply to all your accounts at once.
  3. 3Pick the AI moderation level. Balanced hides attacks and competitor promotion and keeps criticism; Strict hides anything that could hurt sales under a post while still keeping questions.
  4. 4Add "always keep" and "always hide" phrases in plain words: your product names, your competitors' names, the topics you do not want under your posts.
  5. 5Turn on replies for the account when you are ready: pick a voice preset, give the agent your product facts, and test it on real comments first.

Comments that should become DMs

Some comments need privacy: an order number, a complaint, a discount code, a medical question under a supplement post. The best pattern is a short public reply ("sending you a message now") and the real answer in a direct message. A comment-to-DM flow does the whole thing automatically: a trigger (keyword, intent or any comment on a post), a message, optional questions and conditions, and a handover to a person when the flow cannot help.

A weekly routine that keeps it honest

  • Once a day, five minutes in the hidden queue. Unhide the mistakes; a good tool learns from them.
  • Once a week, read the reasons. If one keyword hides more good comments than bad, remove it.
  • Before a launch, tighten: raise the AI level for the launch posts, use Instagram's Limits for non-followers, and pre-write the answers to the five questions you know are coming.

Try it on your own comments

Engageefy hides spam and attacks on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok automatically, explains every hide, and replies to real questions in your voice. From $29 a month for 10,000 comments.
