Comment moderation for Shopify stores: turn ad comments into orders
For a store, the comment section of an ad is a second product page. "Do you ship to Canada?", "is the M true to size?", "is this legit?" are the last questions before checkout, and "same thing 60% cheaper on our page" is a competitor stealing the click you paid for. Here is how to run the comment section of a store that advertises.
What comments under a store's ads actually look like
Across the stores we see, the mix under a well-performing product ad is roughly:
- Buying questions: sizes, shipping cost and time, materials, colours, stock, returns. The most valuable comments on the platform.
- Trust questions: "is this a scam?", "anyone actually received theirs?". Unanswered, these kill conversion for everyone who reads them.
- Delivery complaints from past customers. Real, and worth answering in public then fixing in private.
- Competitor plugs and dropshipping clones: "same product, half price, link in bio".
- Bot spam: crypto, "DM me for a promo", fake giveaways under your brand name.
Hide the ones that cost you sales
Set these to hide automatically. None of them needs a human to read them first:
- Links, and contact details in any disguise. Nobody sells to your audience from your ad.
- Mentions of other pages and accounts, hashtag piles, emoji-only comments.
- Your competitors' names and the words dropshippers use ("same product", "AliExpress", "half price") in your own keyword list.
- Scams and impersonation, caught by an AI pass that reads context rather than by a keyword.
Answer the ones that sell, automatically
Give the AI agent your product facts: sizes and fit, materials, shipping countries, costs and times, return policy, current promotion. It answers "do you ship to Canada?" with the real answer and, when it helps, a short link to the product page on your own domain. It writes in the commenter's language. It does not invent a discount. If the question is about an order, it moves to a direct message.
Set the agent as the default for the page, then create a campaign for each product launch with the product and the link, so the launch ad answers with the right product every time.
Keep complaints visible, then fix them in private
It is tempting to hide every "never arrived". Do not. A store that answers complaints in public ("sorry, that is not right, messaging you now") and resolves them in DMs converts better than a store with a suspiciously clean comment section. Hide hostility; keep and answer complaints. Context-aware moderation makes that distinction for you.
Measure it like a channel
Replies with a link on your own domain (shop.yourbrand.com/boots) count clicks per reply, post and campaign. Compare them with your Shopify sessions from social and you have a number for what the comment section is worth. Most stores find two or three products whose ads sell mainly through the comments; those are the ones to give the most careful agent instructions.
Cash-on-delivery markets
Stores selling with payment on delivery get a different comment section: "do I pay the courier?", "can I open the package first?", "is the phone number real?". Put those answers in the product facts, reply in the local language, and use the comment-to-DM flow to collect the order details when a commenter says "I want one". Trust questions are the whole game here; answer every one.
A setup checklist for a store
- 1Connect the Facebook Page, the Instagram account and the ad account, so dark-post comments are covered.
- 2Switch on links, contact details, mentions, hashtags and emoji filters; add competitor and dropshipper words to the keyword list.
- 3Set AI moderation to Balanced. Add "always keep" phrases such as "shipping", "size", "refund" so questions never get hidden by mistake.
- 4Create one agent with your store's voice and add your top ten products with facts and never-say rules.
- 5Verify your domain for short links, and create a campaign per active product ad.
- 6Read the AI Replied tab weekly; unhide the mistakes so the AI learns your store.
